statek pomnik (2011)

Post Industrial Revolution Residency, Gdansk shipyard.

Made during the Post Industrial Revolution Residency at Gdansk Shipyard, Poland. It was an artistic residency exchange between the UK and Poland focusing on the post-industrial areas of Birmingham and Gdansk, Digbeth and the Gdansk Shipyard.

I adapted a small rowing boat and made it into a Statek Pomnik (a monument ship), a homage to the Gdansk shipyard and its various struggles through history. I was towed around the shipyard island whilst broadcasting solidarity songs, the trip took around an hour and the resulting film was exhibited in the post industrial revolution group show in wyspa's modelarnia space, projected onto a found 8ft cube of polystyrene.

There was also a performance piece where I sang a re-written version of 'Shipbuilding' with guitar accompaniment by Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau. Zbigniew Stefanski,, the local bard sang the original version of the song in Polish. Luckily for me there is no recording of this.
