Ruskin's View & Ruskin's View: a Living Voice (2022).

edition of 6 handmade books & a reimagined version held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

Ruskin’s View is a handmade book of six etching plates drawn in July 2021 by myself, Tessa Brown, Jane Garnett, Kathleen Quaintance, Gervase Rosser & Nina Wakeford.

Drawn during a stay at Brantwood, John Ruskin’s Lake District home. At different times of day each person, sat in the same chair and looked through the same window-pane, drawing the view over the water to the Old Man of Coniston. Each drew on their etching plate in isolation, remaining unaware of what others had depicted. Ruskin’s book, The Elements of Drawing, was on hand for reference. The colour print is a combination of all six plates - a consolidation of Ruskin’s view, produced collaboratively, and forming a new whole, whilst retaining the individual distinctions of perspective and perception. Ruskin's View.

Ruskin’s View: The Living Voice was a project formed from the handmade book with myself, Professor Nina Wakeford and Professor Jane Garnett in conversation with a non-linear collaborative text titled ‘The Living Voice’. Graphic design by Joe Carter Design, book printing by Manuel Marzotti.
